MSN.com has published a seven minute "behind the scenes" video of Howie Day in the studio, creating his new album. The video allows fans to have an intimate look at the creation of the album and features never-before-heard sound clips from "End of Our Days" and "She Says (v2)." Howie's live act is downplayed during the interview and video, although a sidenote is given as an after thought towards the end of the video that chronologs his intense tour schedule, recording for the "I Am Sam" soundtrack, and touring with Tori Amos.
The most exciting news is the list of songs that leaves more to our imagination about the new album. At 0:40, the camera quickly pans over a list of 12 songs with numbers following. Here's a transcription of the entire video:
"When you are growing up, you are always anxious to get away from your home town, travel, and see the world..."
"It's not until you do, that you realize how special the place you couldn't wait to get away from actually is."

- I'll Take You On
Howie: Ultimately, I wanted to perform and I wanted to play live. I knew I had to write some songs. You couldn't just play covers forever. You eventually have to step it up."
Howie: I think my first goal, actually, was to have 45 minutes worth of original material when I was 17 or something, you know. But then, as you know, when people get to know you, you make that cross-over... you come into your own."
[Howie begins to record Perfect Time of Day]
Howie: Okay, I'm going to pretend that I'm at a live gig."
Youth: Ok.
[Music for Perfect Time of Day begins / Shots around the studio - "It's the Perfect Time of Day, It's the Last Day of Your Life..."]
Howie: I'd been on the road for about 3 years, you know, doing really intense touring -- like 300 shows a year, and for the first time, I was given time to... go home... and write songs, and I sat in my apartment and I had -- sort of idle hands -- I didn't know what to do. Once I sort of got into the swing of it and I got the first two or three songs done, they came really fast and it was really exciting and it was really really nice to have the time off to do it."
["... and you won't recall ... anything at all "]
Howie: The whole idea [Perfect Time of Day] is seizing the moment because ... you could go at any time. Pretty classic. It's been written about for years -- that and love, basically... Those two things... you can't stray away from them... you can't beat them... People relate with them no matter what.
Youth: "A little laid back on the choruses..."
Howie: "Well the producer thing, it's always kind of a tough choice, I guess. I've only done it once, but it seems like you just try to pick a produced that's a little more of your personality, you sort of get on with... because, you're going to be working with him twelve hours a day for three months."
["The End of Our Days" starts playing with Howie behind the piano...]
Howie: "The piano sort of my original instrument that I learned music on. It was sort of like my first artistic outlet. It's great that got to be a part of this record. I feel like I sort of unveiled a new thing that no one has seen before."
["Here... where they can't find us... I dare them to call... me out... I'll tell you, we met here on purpose..."]
Youth: "I met Howie almost a year before we started recording the album. There's not many artists of any age that are writing songs and performing them with so much conviction and passion -- um -- as Howie."
[Drums kick in on "End of Our Days" -- "and at the end of the day... I can say what I mean... and I..."]
"Youth has also produced Dido, Crowded House, and the Verve"
Howie: Pretty quickly, I decided that ... you know ... you've gotta have a band on the record... you know -- it's just that thing... you meet friends, you know, there's a friend of a friend -- you meet this guy and he's great ... keyboard player or a great guitar player and he knows a great bass player who used to be in the Verve, who I was a big fan of growing up, and I met a drummer on the road, and these things all come together and it sort of ended up magically happening.
["She Says" begins playing in the background]
Howie: When we were doing the string arrangements for "She Says," everyone from the orchestra was coming into the control room and was like "ooooh... great track..." [Howie makes a goofy, wide-eyed face] "... I wrote that song when I was 16. It's just one of those songs that is almost supernatural.
[Layered piano / guitar playing -- "That's why I'm wondering why you had to tell me... what's going on in your head what's wrong? Come around to another time when you don't have to run..."]
Howie: This one is completely different, it was done all at once in 3 months -- really intense -- working every single day. I didn't experience that on the first record. The first record was 3 songs... and then I'd run out of money... then I'd have to go back on the road for 3 months, and then I'd come back to the studio and record another 2 songs, then I'd go away for another 3 months -- so the first one took over a year to complete, whereas this one was just on one chunk of time. I think, in a way, the record sounds a little bit more consistent and more of a snapshot of where I am right now, which is cool.
